The overall aim of treating sewage is to produce an effluent that can be discharged to the environment while causing as little water pollution as possible, or to produce an effluent that can be reused in a useful manner. This is achieved by removing contaminants from the sewage. It is a form of waste management.
With regards to biological treatment of sewage, the treatment objectives can include various degrees of the following: transform dissolved and particulate biodegradable components (especially organic matter) into acceptable end products, transform and remove nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus), remove or inactivate pathogenic organisms, and remove specific trace organic constituents (micropollutants).
Some types of sewage treatment produce sewage sludge which can be treated before safe disposal or reuse. Under certain circumstances, the treated sewage sludge might be termed "biosolids" and can be used as a fertilizer.
As sewage enters a plant for treatment, it flows through a screen, which removes large floating objects such as rags and sticks that might clog pipes or damage equipment. After sewage has been screened, it passes into a grit chamber, where cinders, sand, and small stones settle to the bottom.

A sewage treatment plant is an industrial facility for the treatment of urban wastewater, largely from toilets and bathrooms, to produce a non-polluting effluent that can be used as part of another process or directly discharged into the environment (for example, rivers). They may also be known as "wastewater treatment works" or "wastewater treatment facilities", treated water as well as sludge are recycled. A WWTP is designed in accordance with the waste composition of the metropolitan area served.
In a sewage treatment plant, they treat the waste before it's discharged into the ocean.
The sewage treatment plant is divided into primary and secondary treatment stages. The primary stage takes place in the screening and grit removal system, where large solids are removed by grit chambers. The secondary stage takes place in several types of settlement tanks, where the activated sludge process is used to remove the organic matter from the wastewater. Treated effluent can then be discharged directly to surface water or further treated for reuse (biogas facilities for gas production or for irrigation as fertiliser, aquaculture facilities).
The sewage treatment plant is a handling plant for separating and reducing the polluting load of untreated municipal sewage brought into it by sewers. The main treatment process consists of sedimentation, where suspended matter falls to the bottom, followed by clarification and filtration. After treatment, the cleaned water, called effluent or secondary waste water, is discharged, either into streams via surface drains or into artificial bodies of water like lakes or reservoirs.

Solid Separation Zone
The first stage transforms the effluent solids to settled solids while allowing scum to float on the surface it is a primary sedimentation zone in which settled sludge is stabilized by anaerobic digestion. the treatment efficiency of the chamber is in the range of 30% BOD removal.
Aeration Zone
The second stage is the aerobic zone along with fab media inside the tank which in turn increases the surface area and retain microorganism long enough to digest the organic substance. clear water overflows to the next treatment chamber. Air is provided through blowers and higher contacting time with the slime on the fab media facilitates efficient digestion. bod removal is around 60%
Final sedimentation Zone
The final stage involves the sedimentation where organic wastes are settled in the sedimentation zone. the settled waste in the bottom of the tank is pumped back to the solid separation zone as a return sludge having active biomass MLSS to increase the efficiency of the system and to ensure that the effluent quality meets the stipulated PCB standards.

A sewage treatment plant is required for all residential and commercial areas. This process is similar to that of a septic tank. However, some additional mechanical components in the former prove a better choice resulting in cleaner and more environment-friendly effluent.Sewage treatment, also known as wastewater treatment, is used to remove contaminants from municipal wastewater. Various physical, biological, and chemical processes are used to treat water.
Small scale wastewater treatment is basically for domestic sewage. This is considered as the secondary treatment specifically designed to remove biological contaminants from water. Usual sources of these impurities are food waste, human waste, detergent, soap, etc.
Many sewage treatment plants in India have been constructed through government funding schemes such as the GAP and the YAP. ASP, UASB, and a series of WSP were the most preferred treatment technologies in earlier days. There are a number of newer treatment technologies that have come into use in recent times that include the MBBR, the FAB, the SBR, and the MBR. Newer technologies are gaining acceptance because of a low footprint and recyclable quality effluent although they are high energy intensive systems. Hence, a need exists for the development of efficient and sustainable technology that can provide recyclable quality treated water with low-operating costs, low capital costs, and a smaller footprint. The AnMBR could be such a technology, which can reduce energy demand for wastewater treatment. The AnMBR facilitates retention of microorganisms in the bioreactor and allows operation with high biomass concentration. Thus, AnMBRs are expected to provide a better quality of treated effluent with energy recovery in terms of biogas.Large industries, factories, and mills generate tons of sewage every day. Some of this waste is so harmful that if it is allowed to leave the neighborhood area, it can cause various diseases and contamination of land and water. It is easy to eliminate solid waste but it is not so easy to remove chemical and biological contaminants from these wastes, so they can be sent to safe areas.
